On Shrek’s seventh birthday, his parents tell him it’s time to venture out into the world, warning that everyone will hate him because of his looks. This proves to be true, and Shrek is forced to live alone in a swamp. One day, though, all the fairytale creatures of the land show up, banished there by Lord Farquaad. Not pleased, Shrek decides to see Farquaad to regain his privacy. Along the way, he rescues a talkative donkey and reluctantly allows him to tag along.

In Duloc, Farquaad is torturing the Gingerbread Man, into revealing the whereabouts of a princess he wishes to marry so that he may finally be a true king. Gingy claims that Princess Fiona is locked in a nearby tower, surrounded by lava and a dragon. Too cowardly himself, Farquaad bargains with Shrek and Donkey that if they find and bring him Fiona he will give Shrek the deed to the swamp.

At the castle, Shrek rescues Fiona while Donkey encounters a ferocious dragon. Fiona is appalled to find that Shrek is not Prince Charming. He explains that he is merely her champion; she is to wed Farquaad. As the sun begins to set, Fiona insists that she spend the night alone...where she is transformed into an ogress.

The next day, Shrek and Donkey tease Fiona about her wedding day and a spark is kindled. Donkey encourages Shrek to tell Fiona how he feels, but before Shrek musters the courage the sun begins to set and Fiona once again rushes away. Donkey visits Fiona and discovers her secret – a curse placed on her by a witch. Only a kiss from her true love will return Fiona to her true form.

Shrek eventually decides to express his feelings but, overhearing part of her conversation with Donkey, he misunderstands and storms off. Next day, Fiona tries to tell Shrek about her curse, but Shrek rebuffs her. Farquaad and his army approach to claim Fiona, who not only agrees to the marriage, but insists that it take place before sunset.

At this point, the fairytale creatures have had it with Farquaad’s discrimination and head to Duloc. Donkey convinces Shrek he misunderstood the situation and the two rush to Duloc to stop the wedding. Shrek finally expresses his feelings to Fiona. Caught between love and her desire to break the curse, she tries to escape but the fairytale creatures storm the wedding. The sun sets, and Fiona turns into an ogress. Farquaad is disgusted, but insists the marriage is binding, He says he’ll lock Fiona in a tower and rule as Duloc’s true king. Shrek whistles for Dragon, who destroys Farquaad in one fiery breath. Shrek and Fiona share a kiss. Fiona’s curse is broken and she takes her true form: an ogress. She is ashamed until Shrek declares that she is beautiful. As Shrek and Fiona begin a new life together, everyone celebrates what makes them special. They all live happily ever after!
